Cleaning Carpet, a Sectional, and a Rug in One Visit: What a Real $620 Job Looked Like
The quick answer: cleaning carpet, a sectional, and an area rug in one visit costs about what the three would cost separately, minus the extra trips. Our most recent job like this came to $620: $300 for three bedrooms and a common area, $200 for a two-piece sectional, and $120 for a 6-foot shag rug. The carpet and sectional were cleaned in the home. The rug was cleaned off-site at our facility, where a deep-pile rug can be properly rinsed and dried.
This post walks through that invoice one line at a time. The job was in a 1920s home in the Chicago area during the first week of November. You'll see what each line covered, why the three items weren't cleaned the same way, where a combined visit really saves money, and when we'd tell you to split it up or skip part of it. The numbers are exactly as billed. The homeowner's details stay private.
| Line | What we cleaned | Where | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Carpet: three bedrooms and the common area | In the home | $300 |
| 2 | Sectional, two pieces | In the home | $200 |
| 3 | Synthetic shag rug, about 6 by 6 feet | Off-site, at our facility | $120 |
| Total (no discount or tax lines) | $620 | ||
The clock: we were on our way at 8:48 AM on Tuesday, November 3, and the job was marked finished at 12:35 PM. That is under four hours for everything done in the home, including the drive.
Line 1: Carpet in Three Bedrooms and the Common Area, $300
"Common area" on this invoice means the upstairs landing and the open sitting space at the top of the stairs. In a home like this, that's the carpet doing the most work, because every trip between the bedrooms and the stairs crosses it. Bedrooms get walked on in a narrower path, mostly from the door to the bed or closet.

The carpet is a multi-tone twisted cut pile, the style usually sold as frieze. Flecked colors are good at hiding soil, and that cuts both ways. Rooms can look fine long after the fibers have loaded up, so appearance alone is a poor guide to when flecked carpet is due. We cleaned it with truck-mounted hot water extraction, which is the core of our professional carpet cleaning service.
Three things about this line are worth noticing when you compare quotes:
- The landing and sitting area were included. Some companies price by the room and count these as extra rooms. Others charge separately for hallways. Ask which areas a "room" price covers.
- There were no add-ons. No CRB scrubber line and no protector line. The whole carpet job was a single price.
- It is an example, not a rate. We confirm carpet prices after an on-site inspection. For scale, a large Glenview basement plus two flights of stairs came to $520. Our guide to what drives carpet cleaning prices covers the other variables.

Copy this: before you call, list every carpeted area, including landings, halls, and closets, not just the bedrooms. Then ask whether the price you're quoted covers all of them.
Line 2: A Two-Piece Sectional, $200
A sectional holds more fabric than it looks like. There are seat cushions and back cushions, the deck underneath, the arms, and the sides, and some of those surfaces go untouched for years. This one is a sofa piece and a chaise piece in a woven gray-brown fabric, sitting on hardwood on the main floor.

Those propped cushions are the part homeowners ask about. Lying flat, a damp cushion dries slowly on the side against the deck. Stood up, both faces get air, and so does the deck. Most upholstered pieces are ready to use within 2 to 4 hours, so leave them propped until they feel dry, then put them back.
There's a reasonable case for doing the furniture at the same time as the floor. The American Lung Association lists upholstered furniture and carpets among the places dust mite allergens build up, alongside bedding and curtains. A cleaning isn't an allergy treatment, and we wouldn't sell it as one. Still, if dust is the reason you're cleaning, a sofa you sit on every night belongs on the list.
On price, we publish $240 for a large sectional. This one was invoiced at $200. Sectionals vary a lot in size, so the final figure is confirmed on site. Our upholstery cleaning page has the full price list.
Copy this: lift a cushion and find the tag before your appointment. American Leather has a clear guide to the W, S, WS, and X codes. Photograph the tag and send it when you book. An S or X code changes how the fabric should be cleaned, and it's better for everyone to know that up front.
Line 3: A 6-Foot Shag Rug, $120, Cleaned Off-Site
You won't find this one in the photos, because it was the one item that didn't get cleaned in the house. That's normal. Consumers' Checkbook, a nonprofit that doesn't take advertising, tells readers plainly that rugs, unlike carpets, should be cleaned outside the home.
The reason is mechanical. Wall-to-wall carpet is fixed, so all you can do is clean it from above. A rug can be moved somewhere it can be dusted, washed, rinsed through, and dried with air on both sides. That matters more with shag than with almost any other pile. Long yarn lets grit settle deep, near the backing, and it holds far more water than a flat weave.
It also protects your floor. The National Wood Flooring Association warns that too much water can get into the seams of a wood floor and damage it. That's why it recommends a damp mop over a wet one. A soaked shag rug lying on hardwood is a much bigger version of the same problem.
Three details from this line of the invoice:
- The rug has its own tag number. It's written on the invoice, and it's how a rug stays matched to its owner while it's out of the house. Ask any company how they track yours.
- There's no pickup or delivery charge. Area rug cleaning includes both free, and no transport line appears on the invoice.
- The price was a single flat line. Our published rate for synthetic rugs starts at $1.90 per square foot, but this deep-pile shag was billed above that, at $120. Our rug cleaning prices by size are a good starting point, not a final quote.
Copy this: get the rug's price and return date before it leaves your house, instead of working it out from a per-square-foot table. Most area rugs are ready within 24 to 48 hours of cleaning, so ask how that fits with the delivery schedule.
What the Combined Visit Actually Saved
Not a discount. The discount field on this invoice is empty, and each line is priced on its own. Combining them helped in three smaller ways that are easy to overlook:
- The visit minimum only applied once. Our regular couch price is $120 and our visit minimum is $180. Booked alone, that couch costs $180. Added to a carpet job, it costs $120. That's $60 back on the small items, and it's the most useful way to think about combining.
- One morning instead of several appointments. Everything done in the home was finished by 12:35 PM.
- The rug comes home to a clean room. There's little point in laying a freshly washed rug on a floor you were planning to clean next month.
If another company offers a package price, compare totals rather than percentages. An advertised discount off a higher list price can still cost more than three plain lines.
Plan It Backward From Thanksgiving
We did this job the first week of November, and the timing is good for a practical reason. Thanksgiving falls on November 26 this year, and the heating season has started. Penn State Extension notes that cold outdoor air holds little moisture to begin with, and indoor humidity in heated homes can easily fall below 30% in winter. Plants don't love it, but damp fibers dry through evaporation, and drier air helps. It's one of the reasons we make the case for fall in our guide to the best time of year to clean carpet.
Working back from the holiday, this is the order we'd suggest:
- Three weeks out: book the visit and arrange the rug pickup. The rug has the longest round trip, so it sets the schedule.
- The week before cleaning: find the sectional's code tag, list your carpeted areas, and flag any stains or pet accidents. Our checklist on how to prepare for carpet cleaning covers the rest.
- Cleaning day: run the fan or the furnace blower if you can, and keep the cushions propped until they feel dry.
- At least a week before guests: have everything finished, so nothing is still damp and the rug is back when you start setting up.
When We Would Tell You Not to Combine
A three-line invoice only makes sense if all three lines are needed. Here's when we'd drop or change one:
- The sofa barely gets used. A formal-room piece with no visible soil can wait. Skip that line.
- Your rug is wool, silk, or Persian. It still goes off-site, but it's priced differently and handled differently. See our notes on wool rug cleaning.
- The real problem is pet urine. Odor sits in the backing and pad, where a routine clean won't reach it. That calls for a pet urine enzyme treatment first.
- You have one stain, not a dirty room. Stain and odor removal may be all you need.
- The budget only covers one line. Pick the item your household actually lives on. Usually that's the carpet on the landing or the sectional in the family room, not the guest room.
From Our Side: Why Three Plain Lines
We could have sold this as a whole-home package at one round number. Listing each item separately means a customer can see that the rug cost $120 and decide next year to leave it out. It also keeps us honest, because a line that isn't needed is easy to spot and easy to cross off.
This invoice is just as much about what's missing. There's no scrubber add-on, no protector, and no pickup fee, and nothing beyond the three items the job called for. Every area is inspected on site, and any change in size, stains, or condition is confirmed with you before we start. We are a family-owned company that has been cleaning carpet around Chicago since 2004, our technicians are IICRC-certified, and every job is backed by our 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to clean carpet, a sectional, and a rug at the same time?
Our most recent job with all three came to $620: $300 for carpet in three bedrooms and a common area, $200 for a two-piece sectional, and $120 for a synthetic shag rug about 6 by 6 feet. Your total depends on carpet area, sectional size, and the rug's material, so we confirm prices after an on-site inspection.
Is it cheaper to clean carpet and upholstery at the same time?
Usually, though the saving comes from the visit minimum rather than a discount. Our regular couch price is $120 and our visit minimum is $180, so a couch booked alone costs $180. Added to a carpet job that already meets the minimum, the same couch costs $120.
Why is an area rug cleaned off-site when carpet is cleaned in the home?
Wall-to-wall carpet is fixed in place, so it has to be cleaned from above. A rug can be moved to a facility where it can be dusted, washed, rinsed through, and dried with air on both sides. That matters most for deep pile like shag, and it keeps a soaked rug off your floor.
How long does it take to clean three bedrooms, a common area, and a sectional?
On this job we were on our way at 8:48 AM and finished at 12:35 PM, so under four hours including the drive. A home with more furniture to move, heavier soil, or more stains can take longer.
How long do carpet, a sectional, and a rug take to dry?
Carpet is usually damp for a few hours and fully dry within six to twelve. Most upholstered pieces are ready to use within 2 to 4 hours. Most area rugs are ready within 24 to 48 hours of cleaning, plus the time it takes to bring them back.
What do the W, S, WS, and X codes on a sectional mean?
They are the manufacturer's cleaning codes, usually printed on a tag under the cushions. W means water-based cleaners are safe, S means solvent-based cleaners only, WS or SW means either, and X means professional cleaning only. Share the code when you book, since it affects how the fabric should be cleaned.
Carpet, a sectional, and a rug are three different cleaning problems that happen to share one household. Treated that way, they came to three plain prices and one $620 invoice, with the carpet and sofa finished before lunch.
